Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointments to the Public Health Advisory Commission

Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of 18 members to the Public Health Advisory Commission.

The 24-member commission will complete an assessment of the current public health service delivery system in Michigan, at both the state and local level. It will include a review of:

• the organization of public health functions within and across the executive departments of this state;

• the division of responsibilities between state and local public health authorities; and

• the regulatory framework established by the Public Health Code, 1978 PA 368.

The commission is to complete its work and issue a final report to the Governor for his consideration no later than April 1, 2017.

“Ensuring the health and safety of all our residents is of the utmost importance. This board will be part of continuing efforts by the state to ensure we are putting the health of Michiganders above all else,” Snyder said.

The state’s Chief Medical Executive, Dr. Eden Wells, will be a voting

member and serve as chair.

Cynthia Aaron of Milan is the medical director for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Regional Poison Control Center. She also is the director of medical and clinical toxicology education at Wayne State University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wesleyan University and a medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Aaron will represent toxicologists.

Eric Adelman of Farmington Hills is the executive director of Kadima, a comprehensive residential, therapeutic and social service provider to all people with mental health needs. He holds a bachelor’s degree in

Judaic Studies from George Washington University, a master’s degree in public administration from Wayne State University and a post-masters certificate in finance from Oakland University. Adelman will represent the general public.

Denise Chrysler of Lansing is director of the Network for Public Health Law Mid-States Regional Center at the University of Michigan. She holds a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from the University of Michigan. Chrysler will represent schools of public health from higher education institutions.

Abdul El-Sayed of Detroit is the executive director and health officer for the Detroit Health Department. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and political science from the University of Michigan, a Ph.D. in Public Health from Oxford University, and a medical degree from Columbia University. He will represent the local public health officials.

William Fales of Kalamazoo is an associate dean for clinical applications, chief of EMS and Disaster Medicine, program director of the EMS fellowship program and an associate professor at Western Michigan University’s Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. Fales will represent medical school in this state.

Kathleen Forzley of Troy is the health officer for Oakland County Health Division. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental health and a master’s degree in public administration from Oakland University. Forzley will represent local public health officials.

Mark Fowler of East Jordan is the water/wastewater superintendent for Boyne City. He holds a certificate in wastewater treatment technology from Northwestern Michigan University and an associate’s degree in business administration from Northwestern Michigan College. Fowler will represent local directors of Public Works.

Debra Furr-Holden of Flint is a C.S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She holds a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences and public health and a Ph.D. in drug and alcohol dependence and epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University. Furr-Holden will represent epidemiologists.

Robert Gouin of Shepherd is the environmental health director of Mid-Michigan District Health Department. He holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial and environmental health management from Ferris State University and a master’s degree in business administration from Walden University. He will represent environmental health experts.

Mona Hanna-Attisha of West Bloomfield is the director of the pediatric residency program at Hurley Medical Center in Flint and is an assistant professor of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in resource ecology and management/environmental health from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree from the University Of Michigan School Of Public Health and a medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Hanna-Attisha will represent physicians.

Chris Kolb of Ann Arbor is president and CEO of the Michigan Environmental Council. He holds a bachelor’s degree in natural resources from the University of Michigan. Kolb will represent the non-profit health/environmental organizations.

Dianne Malburg of Holt is the chief operations officer of the Michigan Pharmacists Association. She holds an associate’s degree in pre-pharmacy, and a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy and applied biology from Ferris State University. Malburg will represent licensed pharmacists.

Bill Manns of Ada is president of Trinity Health/Mercy Health Saint Mary’s. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan. Manns will represent a member with hospital administration experience.

Susie Meshigaud of Wilson is the director of health and human services of Hannahville Indian Community. She holds a bachelor of business administration from New Mexico Highlands University. Meshigaud will represent the general public.

Kristen Schweighoefer of Ann Arbor is the environmental health director of Washtenaw County Public Health. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree of public health from the University of Michigan. Schweighoefer will represent food safety experts.

Ann Sheehan of Kalamazoo is as assistant professor at Michigan State University College of Nursing. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Nazareth College, as well as a master’s degree and a doctorate in nursing practice from the University of Iowa. Sheehan will represent registered nurses.

Michelle Styma of Posen is the CEO of Thunder Bay Community Health Services, Inc. She holds an associate’s degree in commerce from Alpena Community College, a bachelor’s degree in community development and health services administration from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree in organizational management from Spring Arbor University. She will represent the general public.

Melinda Wilkins of East Lansing is the director of the Online Master of Science Food Safety with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. She holds a master’s degree of public health from the University of Illinois, a doctor of veterinary medicine and a PhD in large animal clinical sciences with a focus in epidemiology from Michigan State University. Wilkins will represent veterinarians.

The following five department heads or their designees will serve as non-voting, ex-officio members:

• Jamie Clover Adams, Director, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

• Heidi Grether, Director, Department of Environmental Quality

• Nick Lyon, Director, Department of Health and Human Services

• Shelly Edgerton, Director, Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

• Kriste Kibbey Etue, Director, Michigan State Police

Members will serve terms expiring at the pleasure of the governor.
