MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC)- An emotional ceremony was held Friday on Northern Michigan University's campus mall. A perennial flower memorial garden was dedicated to former NMU Provost Paul Lang Jr.

Provost Lang passed away January 9th, 2015 after a brief illness. He served almost 20 years as professor, dean, and provost at Northern Michigan University. First hired as head of the criminal justice department.

During Friday's ceremony, NMU faculty members and Lang's wife spoke about his impact on the lives of others and the university.

“Paul was instrumental in helping bring Jamrich Hall to what it is today as truly a premier instructional facility,” said Dr. Fritz Erickson, President of Northern Michigan University. ”Having this garden right here on the lawn of Jamrich couldn't be more fitting.”

The garden, as well as a plaque commemorating Provost Lang can be seen in the NMU campus mall, in front of Jamrich Hall.
