MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The UP Honor Flight continues to grow each year.
One Marquette resident wants to do even more to help recognize local veterans.
Air Force Veteran and former Marquette City Mayor, Jerry Irby says he's organizing a spaghetti dinner fundraiser.
Irby, who attended the Honor Flight this past September was so moved by the experience, he wanted a way to give back.
The dinner is scheduled for May 16, 2020, at the Elks Lodge in Marquette.
Irby says he’s hoping for a big turnout so that he can raise as much money for the Honor Flight as possible.
"I want to give everything that I can give back to they who gave for me. So if I can gain back $3,500 or whatever, I want to do that,” Irby asserted.
Irby went on to say raising money to send veterans on the Honor Flight isn’t his only motivation.
“And then also to give the guys who went before a chance to get together and have a spaghetti feed together with the families and the volunteers. When they walk in, I want them to revisit what they had before,” Irby announced.
Irby says the evening of Saturday, May 16 will feature the traditional spaghetti dinner with meat sauce, garlic bread, salad, desserts, coffee and camaraderie, so mark your calendars.
Irby wants to remind everyone that financial donations are an easy way to recognize the veterans that have served and all proceeds will be given directly to the UP Honor Flight to be put towards the mission.
Irby says he’s looking for volunteers to help prepare and serve throughout the event. If you’re interested in helping, call Irby at 906-228-4537.
