Fuel spill delays traffic on US-2 in Bates Township

BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - A fuel spill on US-2 in Bates Township caused traffic delays on Thursday afternoon.

Michigan State Police Iron Mountain post responded to a tractor/truck that was leaking fuel on the highway.

The tractor/truck had a full 81-gallon tank of diesel fuel when it started to leak onto the eastbound lane of US-2 and the shoulder of the road near Larson Park in Iron County.

State Police did not give an estimate as to how much fuel spilled.

Troopers say that the truck is owned by Hebert Construction out of Iron River and was driven by a 58-year-old Iron River man.

State Police say crews were on scene working on containing the fuel and cleaning up the roadway, Motorists were slowed down and urged to use caution while traveling in the area.

The driver was cited for the spilled load on the highway.

The Iron River Police Department, West Iron County, Fire Department, and Aspirus Ambulance assisted on scene.
