IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) - With Veterans Day coming up, The John Fornetti Dental Center wanted to make their day even more special.
"These are very good people, and they've been very, very generous to all the people that have been in the service,” said Veteran Eugene Carollo.
Doctor John Fornetti says most veterans can't afford to go to the dentist, which motivated his office to host Dentistry from The Heart to allow veterans the opportunity to get their teeth cleaned free of charge.
"The reason we started this five years ago now is the fact that we learned that only nine percent of our veterans qualify for dental benefits,” said Dr. Fornetti.
Thus, his office teamed up to change what's going on in their area.
"On this day, we offer free exams, cleanings and we take the x-rays, do the exams and fillings and we just get them done for our veterans,” said Dr. Fornetti.
But Dr. Fornetti doesn't want to take all the credit. He says without the support from the community, such as local restaurants donating food or even the drug store partnering with them to provide free antibiotics, none of this would've even been possible.
"The community involvement is increasing all the time. All these people that are volunteering, we get calls hey, can we help... what can we do, and sometimes it's helping us physically, sometimes it's I'm not going to be there can I drop off baked goods or can I bring something, it's just wonderful,” said Dr. Fornetti.
And those helping say they're just happy to put a smile on a veterans face.
"It's a really good feeling to be able to give back to people that we owe so much to like our veterans,” said Marketing Associate Cassidy Hinshaw.
"It makes me feel very happy and kind of emotional so I was very excited to come out today and kind of be a part of this,” said Registered Dental Hygienist, Kira Massie.
The John Fornetti Dental Center will be putting on a similar event like this for public to get their teeth cleaned for free in February.
