UPDATE: Name released of woman who died at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

UPDATE, Thursday, Sept. 20, 3:41 p.m.

A California woman who died after falling at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has been identified.

32-year-old Tu Thanh Nguyen from Sunnyvale, California, slipped and fell to her death in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Nguyen was hiking by herself on the North Country Trail and she stopped about a half-mile east of Grand Portal Point to take pictures of herself, when she fell about 200 feet off the cliff edge to Lake Superior.

The fall was witnessed by two kayakers who were able to retrieve her and bring her to shore near Chapel Beach. A local kayak company radioed for emergency services for assistance.

National Park Service, Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Alger County EMS, and the U.S. Coast Guard personnel responded in a coordinated recovery effort.

Nguyen’s family has been notified.

The fatality is considered an accident.

A California woman is dead after falling at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

According to the National Park Service, park rangers responded to a report of a potentially deceased person at Chapel Beach around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Upon arriving on the scene, park rangers, along with Alger County paramedics, confirmed that a 32-year-old California woman died as the result of a fall.

National Park Service officers are investigating. No further information is being released.
