Escanaba residents discuss water rate increase at meeting

ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - The Escanaba City Council held an informational meeting to discuss the recently recommended water rate increase.

The Council invited the public as well as wastewater superintendent Jeff Lampi to ask questions and give opinions of a recommended 45% increase of water and wastewater rates in the city.

Lampi explained the increase is necessary to upgrade aging facilities and replacing water mains.

"I wish we had a larger showing, but I think that maybe word will spread and people will understand why we're doing what we're doing instead of just hearing we have a rate increase and not knowing why," said Lampi.

There will still be several opportunities for public comment before the city council decides whether or not to adopt the rates sometime in July.
