IRON RIVER, Mich. (WLUC) - An animal shelter in Iron River is working hard tonight to get pets adopted and in homes for the holidays.

Northwoods Animal Shelter took part in the “Empty the Shelters” event on Saturday. The campaign is put on by the Bissell Pet Foundation. They helped sponsor special $25 adoption fees for the day.

Those in attendance were encouraged to bring their loved ones, pets and kids, to the shelter to get pictures with Santa Claus. For Northwoods Animal Shelter, having events like this is crucial to their success.

“It’s important to get the community involved and it’s also important that we generate donations as we are a non-profit. Donations are so big this time of year for every animal shelter, as that’s what we need to keep operating, to make sure these animals are safe and healthy,” said Michelle Clements, Manager of Northwoods Animal Shelter.

As part of today’s event, 16 cats and seven dogs were adopted.
