Man killed in officer-involved shooting near Marinette

MARINETTE COUNTY, Wis. (WLUC) - UPDATE: 12/7/17 9:40 a.m. eastern time:

A man is dead after he was shot and killed by law enforcement early Thursday morning near Marinette.

According to the Marinette County Sheriff's Office, there was some type of incident involving a man and a handgun at a motel in the City of Marinette. It's still unclear if it was a robbery attempt or a domestic incident.

Investigators determined the potential suspect was at or near a home on State Highway 64 in the Town of Peshtigo. Marinette County deputies and Marinette City Police officers went to the location and saw a man enter a vehicle and head westbound on Highway 64.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle at Schacht Road. Investigators say the vehicle went partially into the ditch and the man exited the vehicle armed with a handgun, placing the officers in danger.

The suspect was shot and killed by officers and was pronounced dead at the scene. The two Marinette City officers and two Marinette County deputies at the scene were not injured.

Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve says the public is no longer in any danger. Highway 64 will be closed and detoured for several hours as the Wisconsin Department of Justice conducts its investigation.

The name of the deceased man and the officers involved and other information will be released when appropriate, Sauve says.

Law enforcement at the scene of an "emergency incident" in Marinette County say the situation is still active, but it remains unclear what exactly is happening.

Wisconsin State Highway 64 is still closed in the Town of Peshtigo, which is just to the west of Marinette. According to the Wisconsin DOT, an alternative route is as follows: Eastbound traffic will go southbound on CTH RW, eastbound traffic on CTH RW will go through eastbound on Pine Street towards Business 41, then onto US-41 northbound until Roosevelt Road where traffic will merge back onto WIS 64.

Westbound traffic is to use the reverse route.

The Marinette County Sheriff's Office says investigators believe this is an isolated incident, and the public is not in danger. Sheriff Jerry Sauve will release further details as they become available.

WIS 64 in Marinette, Wisconsin is closed Thursday morning due to an emergency incident.

Both east and west bound lanes are closed between CTH, RW and Brosig Road.

Witnesses say there are a lot of police officers in the area.

According to the Marinette County Dispatch Center, the public is not in danger.

No further information has been given at this time.
