Eagle Mine hosts community forums to get public input on operations

MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) - Eagle Mine is hosting a series of public community forums to gain community input on their mining operations.

"We like to know how the community feels about us, where they think we could make improvements," said Kristen Mariuzza, General Manager at Eagle Mine.

Eagle Mine 'East' is expected to be online by the end of 2019. It is a project designed to access a mineral deposit near Eagle Mine. In the meantime, the mine says they want to make sure they're up front about their operations.

"It's really just understanding the concern, sometimes they bring things up that we don't realize people are thinking about," said Mariuzza.

"I think Eagle Mine, if we have any complaints or any concernes, they address them very quickly," said William Seppanen, Michigamme Township Supervisor. "They let us know and they let everybody know."

Eagle Mine has started looking into expansion projects. Exploration will start early 2019 in Covington Township to explore the chance to expand mining operations-and possibly extend their 2023 closure date.

"We want to understand what the community's expectations are and some concerns they might have around that," said Mariuzzi. "With exploration, we're hoping we can push that closure date out."

"The mine is good for employment," said Seppanen. "It's good for the economy of the Upper Peninsula and Marquette county and Michigamme Township."

Also on Eagle Mine's agenda-addressing concern on the environmental impact their operations will leave behind. Eagle Mine says the Humboldt Mine Pit will be left behind-they say they're leaving as little environmental impact as possible.

"We believe in being very transparent with the community so we want to make sure they're there for that and the information is getting out there," said Mariuzza.

Friday's public meeting is the second in a series of community forums.

The next upcoming meeting dates are:
Monday, November 12
12 p.m. to 1 p.m., Eagle Mine Information Center in Marquette
Tuesday, November 13
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thunder Bay Inn in Big Bay
