Drivers and pedestrians: Look out for each other

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - Winter weather can make crossing the street a dangerous activity. Sidewalks and roads become slippery, visibility is low. All this makes it more important for pedestrians and drivers to look out for each other.

Pedestrians should always use designated crosswalks and heed signal lights. You should also watch for traffic and wait until it is clear to cross.

"Don't step out in front of vehicles. That happens a lot or we will get a lot of vehicles that will just stop when pedestrians aren't even in the crosswalk. So, they will wave them through. That is when we get accidents. That is when we get people struck because there is that second lane. That traffic can't see that pedestrian," said Lieutenant Nick Roberts.

Houghton Police Department has not seen any incidents of pedestrians struck in crosswalks so far this year. Lieutenant Roberts says there have likely been many close calls.
