Driver fatally injured in head-on crash

Deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff's Department were called to a two vehicle crash on M-26 near Coal Dock Road in Franklin Township at 7:50 a.m. Monday morning.
The crash occurred when a 2005 Chevy pickup, driven by an 63-year-old Dollar Bay man, and a 2002 Honda Accord, driven by a 21-year-old Chassell man, hit head on.
The Honda driver and his 21-year-old girlfriend were both ejected from the vehicle and sustained significant injuries. They were both transported by Mercy Ambulance to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. They were later flown to Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau, Wisconsin, where the driver died due to the extent of his injuries. The passenger's condition is unknown at this time.
The driver of the pickup truck had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Hurontown Fire Jaws of Life. He and his passengers, a 61-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man, both of Dollar Bay, were transported by Mercy Ambulance to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. The woman was later transported to U.P. Health System - Marquette for further treatment of her injuries. A third passenger, a 6-year-old by, was uninjured in the crash.
The sheriff's department was assisted at the scene by the Dollar Bay First Responders, Hancock Police Department, Houghton Police Department, Hurontown Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance and Superior Service Towing.
The accident remains under investigation.
