UPDATE: Names released in Baraga County deadly crash

BARAGA COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) - UPDATE: 2:50 p.m. Dec. 6
The names have been released for those involved in a fatal car crash Thursday morning in Baraga County.

According to the Baraga County Sheriff's Office, a southbound 2012 Toyota SUV driven by Lisa Zasadnyj, 37, was struck head-on by a northbound 2006 Nissan van driven by James Turriff, 31, both of L'Anse at 5:51 a.m Thursday.

Zasadnyj was transported away from the scene by Bay Ambulance and taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital for treatment. Turriff was pronounced dead at the scene.

US-41 between Baraga and L'Anse was at least partially closed until 11 a.m.

Sheriff's deputies were assisted at the scene by Michigan State Police, Baraga Village Police, L'Anse Fire Department, Baraga Fire Department, and Bay Ambulance.

The crash remains under investigation.

US-41 between Baraga and L'Anse has reopened following a deadly crash Thursday morning near L'Anse Bay.

As of 11:00 a.m., MDOT says US-41 is back open. It had been closed between Menge Creek Road and Plains Cutoff Road.

Authorities confirm one person was killed and another person has critical injuries. No further details were available. MDOT reported the initial road closure at 7:03 a.m. Thursday.

According to L'Anse Area Schools Superintendent Susan Tollefson, L'Anse and Baraga schools started on time. Any staff or students who are affected by the highway closure were advised to arrive at school when possible.

A National Weather Service observer near Baraga reported 5.5 inches of fresh snow fell overnight.
