MARQUETTE, Mich. The Community Foundation for Marquette County has received a generous gift of $1.1 million. The donation was a gift from recently deceased Colonel Bernadette Reider.

Reider spent her career in the United States Army Nurse Corps, and served as a nurse in three wars: World war II, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War. After the conclusion of her nursing career in the military, Reider volunteered at her church and at Marquette General Hospital, and also cared for her mother and siblings.

$560,000 of the donation provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue a nursing degree. The 2016 recipients of the scholarship are Rachael Marie Loman, Cheyanne Elizabeth Njust, and Nicole Marie Usher.

Animal shelter UPAWS received $390,000 of the donation, and St. Christopher's Catholic Church received $190,000

The foundation says the donation reflects the generosity Reider demonstrated throughout life.

"She was an amazing, amazing lady," the foundation's C.E.O., Gail Anthony said. "She cared about everybody, every animal, everything. She had a real generous, kind giving spirit, and now that spirit will carry on her legacy in perpetuity."
