City of Houghton hopes to develop boardwalk for the community to enjoy
Houghton's latest plan to add a parking deck and pier downtown has officially been backed by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
The MEDC has offered to fund 90 percent of the 3.77 million dollar project. The project would include around an 80 by 300 foot pier located between the Portage Lake District Library and the MTU Lakeshore Center.
A split level parking deck is also part of the project. A portion of the waterfront trail will be rerouted to provide more access for pedestrians.
The city hopes to create a common area downtown to not only provide a space for future events, but also to embrace Houghton's unique landscape.
"You know it would be a great place for date night or maybe we can flood it and play hockey on it in the wintertime," said Eric Waara, Houghton city manager. "Who knows, but we have a list of things that we would like to see and make this work, but we want to ask the community so hopefully we can build those elements in and make this a place that everyone wants to use."
The city still needs to fill out an application. Waara hopes to have construction started by next year.
