NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) - Negaunee City Manager Nate Heffron announced Monday the Negaunee Compost Site days of operation and hours will be limited due to misuse of the facility.

“Several individuals have illegally dumped trash, furniture, and other debris at the compost site, forcing us to take a more hands-on approach in managing this facility,” Heffron said.

According to Heffron, additional measures will be taken to help manage the compost site such as annually disposing of accumulating brush piles, providing more signage on what is allowed to be disposed of at the site, and more surveillance of the area to prevent illegal dumping.

The Negaunee Compost Site will only be open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (excluding holidays) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The compost season will begin on the last Saturday of April and end on the First Saturday in November each year.

“It’s unfortunate that we cannot allow complete access of this site to the public for the convenience of our residents, but it it’s our responsibility to manage this site for its intended purpose,” Heffron said.

According to city ordinance, dumping items illegally is punishable up to $500.
