Northern Michigan University students and staff can expect promising changes to come in the near future.

At Friday’s Board of Trustees meeting, members approved women's wrestling as an emerging sports for women list.

The university will be the first public university in Michigan to sponsor women's wrestling as a scholarship level program.

The board also approved increasing room and board rates by 2.84 percent for more traditional dorms and by 2.88 percent for The Woods.

The board also agreed to endorse an Indigenous People's Day celebration.

"The fact that we kept our room rates well below 3 percent, I think is a real testament to our continued commitment to affordability,” said NMU President Fritz Erickson.

Changes to room and board rates will be made in the 2021 fiscal year.

NMU also will start the hiring process for a women's wrestling coach this summer, in addition to opening the recruitment process, with plans to begin women's wrestling as a club sport to help with the emerging procedure.
