Calumet man dead after crashing vehicle due to medical emergency

On Thursday, November 29th, Michigan State Police Calumet Post were dispatched to a traffic crash at Fourth Street and Scott Street in the Village of Calumet.

On scene investigation and witness statements shows that 56-year-old Jeffrey Ruona of Calumet suffered a medical emergency while leaving the roadway before striking a parked vehicle and coming to rest against a fence.

The driver was unresponsive when approached by witnesses.

Lifesaving efforts were attempted by Calumet Township First Responders and Mercy EMS personnel before he was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Troopers were assisted on scene by Calumet Township First Responders and Mercy EMS. The crash remains under investigation.
