ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - Members of the Delta County community joined together with representatives of Bay College for the groundbreaking expansion of athletic facilities for the Bay College Norse.
The 6000 square foot add-on includes four additional locker rooms, a coach's and referee's locker room, a sports conditioning room, offices, and a meeting space.
The new construction will be added on to the south and east side of the YMCA's current gymnasium and will cause users of the YMCA to see some changes said YMCA Executive Director Gary Nash.
"We'll be losing some of our closest parking spaces to the building but that's all good because the outcome is better for everybody in the end."
The Norse had been making use of the YMCA's regular locker facilities during home games but this expansion will allow that to change said Bay's Athletic Director, Matt Johnson.
"We were impeding on the YMCA's locker room space and other facilities and to allow us to move out of that space, gives the local community some of their space back. For us, as an athletic department, it gives our student athletes a place that they can call home."
The cost of the project will be around one million dollars which is being covered by a donation from the Hannahville Indian Community.
"You know the thing that I'm amazed most about is the community support. Obviously Hannahville was incredibly gracious with what they donated and allowed to have happen with this expansion and we can't say thank you enough," said Johnson.
Construction will start in the next few days with plans to open the facility late next spring.
