Baraga women avoids jury trial by entering plea to embezzlement charges

KEWEENAW COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) - A Baraga women arrested for embezzlement avoided jury trial scheduled for Monday by entering a plea in Keweenaw County Courts.

Kelly Tapani, 43, pleaded no contest on January 24 to one count of embezzlement by an agent, servant, or employee in an amount greater than $50,000 but less than $100,000.

Tapani was arrested on March 14 of 2018 after a several month long investigation put on by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

Her charges stemmed from Tapani’s position she held at the Vansville Bar, located in Keweenaw County.

The owner of the bar requested that the sheriff's office investigate the embezzlement, which took place over a five month period in 2017. Over that time, Tapani embezzled between $50,000 and $100,000.

A sentencing date is scheduled for March 6.
