L'ANSE, Mich. (WLUC) - The Baraga County Chamber of Commerce held a special event on Saturday for downtown shoppers.

They were an official “Welcome Station” for Small Business Saturday, which is a nation-wide initiative to encourage people to shop at locally owned businesses.

From 9 a.m. – noon, shoppers were invited to come into the Chamber office for refreshments and grab a special tote bag to bring from store to store.

“It’s important to support local businesses because the money does stay in the community. When you spend a dollar here, much of it stays in the community and helps it grow. So we’re just promoting small business and small business Saturday is all about shopping local,” said Roxanne Osga, Executive Director of the Baraga Chamber of Commerce.

This is the 10th anniversary of Small Business Saturday. The event is put on each year by American Express. Businesses and organizations can sign up to be an official welcome station and receive free promotional items.
