Baraga County has a new contest guessing on when the ice on the bay will break.

Those driving along US-41 may see a barrel sitting on top of the ice on L’Anse bay. People in Baraga County can make guesses on when the barrel will fall through the ice and into the water for a cash prize of 50 percent of the contest's profit.

The contest was set up by the Baraga Chamber of Commerce and this is the first year they're holding it.

"It's a little of looking forward to spring and seeing when the ice goes away as well as a fundraiser that doesn't make people have to go anywhere or do anything, they can kind of passively watch it and have the excitement of picking the right day," said Roxanne Osga, Executive Director of the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce.

Tickets range from $5 for one, to $100 for 40. They can be bought

or at the Baraga Chamber of Commerce office, and will be sold until March 15th or until the barrel falls through the ice.
