ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - Athletes from all around the U.P. gathered in Escanaba for the Special Olympics track and field events.

The events were held at the Escanaba High School track, but due to the weather, several events were brought indoors.

But the weather didn't stop many athletes competing in events like running, softball throw, and high jump.

Participants say that while the competitions are great, the relationships made along the way are really the best part.

"Competing against each other and making friends. Making new friends. I've made a lot of friends through Special Olympics," said athlete Jeff Hardwick.

The Upper Michigan region of the Special Olympics contains over 800 athletes.
