UPDATE: Name of suspect arrested for 1976 Marinette County double homicide released

MARINETTE, Wis. (WLUC) - Marinette County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the man arrested for a double homicide from July 8th, 1976, in the town of Silver Cliff.

82-year-old Raymond L. Vannieuwenhoven of Lakewood, Wisconsin, was arrested as a result of D.N.A. evidence.

His D.N.A. match was confirmed by the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Lab.

Marinette County Sheriffs held a press conference on Friday afternoon and released more details about the suspect.

Sheriffs describe Vannieuwenhoven as in good health for his age. He is a widower with several children. It is believed that he lived in Lakewood Wisconsin for the past 17 years and regionally before that.

Investigators are still looking into his past but believe that if he has a previous criminal record that it is minimal.

It is unknown at this time how he was connected to the victims. The case was cold for 42 and a half years.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no set date for Vannieuwenhoven to appear in court. More information on the investigation is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

The Marinette County Sheriff says an arrest has been made in a 1976 double homicide.

No details have been released about the person arrested.

David Schuldes and Ellen Mathys were murdered on July 9, 1976 in McClintock Park in the Town of Silver Cliff. Investigators released a new composite photo of the suspect in July 2018, thanks to new DNA technology.

Sheriff Jerry Sauve and other investigators will release more details at a press conference Friday at 2:00 p.m.
