MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - 906 Adventure Team is continuing its partnership with local trails by donating $9,000 - a significant percentage of proceeds from the Polar Roll winter adventure race this past February - to the Range Area Mountain Bike Association and the Noquemanon Trail Network.
Since 2015, the 906 Adventure Team has donated over $100,000 to local community groups, supporting the continued development of Marquette County as a premiere outdoor destination in the Midwest.
"Events like Marji Gesick, Polar Roll and The Crusher have drawn national attention and thousands of visitors annually," says 906 Adventure Team Director Todd Poquette.
“Sharing the proceeds of these events with partner non-profits helps ensure the maintenance and continued development of our trails across Marquette County.”
906 Adventure Team events serve to promote the region’s deep history in order to show event participants and supporters the vast resource of trails, natural resources in the area, and opportunities for adventure.
This year’s Polar Roll was challenging for the group to pull off. Multiple winter storms leading up to the race covered trees and groomed trails with up to 40” of snow and ice, forcing 906 Adventure Team and RAMBA supporters to work day and night to clear over 30 miles of trails around the clock. Endless days and nights in the woods earned the dedicated volunteers the nickname “The Bushwackers.”
“Without the commitment of nearly 100 volunteers – many of whom go unrecognized for their contributions – Polar Roll would have been cancelled,” says Poquette.
“I’m going to hang onto this memory for a long time. We could have been defeated by the magnitude of the task in front of us. We could have complained about bad luck. Instead we focused on what needed to be done, and it got done. Moments like this force us to rely on what we share in common instead of what divides us. It was tough, but it reminded us of what
is most important: the community.”
906 Adventure Team continues to support local trail organizations while ensuring the sustainability of its core mission to show kids that adventure is closer than they think, helping turn kids on bikes into confident, resilient, and healthy adults.
