40th anniversary of Sister City agreement between Marquette and Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The Marquette Area Sister Cities Partnership hosted three guests from the Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit on Tuesday evening on Northern Michigan University’s campus.

The three guests included Tsutomu Nakagawa, Consul General, Nakagawa’s wife, and Ms. Mayuko Chashiro, an Education, Culture and Public Relations Official.

This event celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Sister City agreement between Marquette and Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan.

During this trip, the Consul General has been meeting with people in the city government, people in local economic development and officials from Northern Michigan University.

"He's really impressed with the way our educational community works with our business community, and business community works with local government and we are all sort of on the same page to further our community,” said Steve VandenAvond, Vice President for Extended Learning and Community Engagement at NMU.

NMU officials believe this visit with the Consul General will help Northern develop partnerships with Japanese high schools and universities, in order to grow exchange programs.
