UPDATE: 3:00 p.m. July 23: Marquette Police have suspended the search for the missing kayaker near Presque Isle Park in Lake Superior.

According to Marquette Police Department (MPD) Captain Greg Kinonen, the official search has been suspended for the weekend for 40-year-old Brett Harriman, of Marquette. Searchers spent seven hours out on Friday.

“At this point, it is more a recovery than a rescue,” Kinonen said in a phone call Friday afternoon.

On Wednesday, July 21, Harriman went into Lake Superior off Presque Isle near the pavilion with his kayak.

The police captain said they’ve utilized all technology available to them in the search, including boats, drones, sonar and K9 units.

“On land, every island has been searched, and all along the shoreline,” Kinonen said.

He said the area Harriman’s capsized kayak was found in is too deep for divers.

While the official search has been suspended until Monday morning, Kinonen said that the U.S. Coast Guard boats plan to do some patrolling this weekend in the area Harriman’s kayak was located and along the shoreline and islands nearby.
