MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - A Marquette library is first in the U.P. to receive a large grant from the National Endowment of the Arts.

A $20,000 Big Read grant has been awarded to the Peter White Public Library. It will help create multiple programs based on an author and book of their choosing.

Library staff chose Joy Harjo’s book of poems titled An American Sunrise. The book highlights aspects of Native American life in the 1800′s.

Upcoming events will include poetry workshops, art exhibits, and a virtual reading from the author.

The library’s Program Coordinator, Martin Achatz, hopes the events are educational for the community.

“There’s been a lot of discussion, sometime heated discussion, centering around Native American culture in the Marquette area,” says Achatz. “It was to try to create dialogue and understanding between people and hopefully bring people together.”

The Peter White Library hopes to involve Munising and Keweenaw libraries in the programs, which are scheduled to start in September of this year.
