MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - An unsolved murder, that happened in Marquette more than three decades ago, has been featured in a popular true crime podcast.

The Isle” is the Audiochuck “Park Predator” podcast episode featuring the 1988 murder of Paul Girard in Marquette’s Presque Isle Park.

The 33 minute episode description says, “The question of who killed Paul Girard on a sacred Native American chief’s grave may soon be answered. The key to solve the 33-year-old cold case may be buried in Lake Superior or it might be with scientists in Michigan.”

On the morning of September 30, 1988, 34-year old Paul Girard was found dead near Chief Kawbawgam’s grave with multiple stab wounds in the back, chest and face. After hundreds of interviews, Marquette City Police Department was able to narrow down a male suspect, but there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him.

“This was a man who had said he had done it, but when we interviewed him, he asked for an attorney, and since we didn’t have enough information, we did everything we possibly could to bring him to trial, but we weren’t able to develop a case against him,” said retired Detective Captain Hank Steede, in an interview with TV6 in Sept. 2018.

The 2021 podcast episode also notes that Girard’s family and friends say he was an openly gay man his entire life, but that he wasn’t always accepted in the community because of it. Marquette City Police told the “Park Predators” podcast creators that Girard had made several reports of assault in the past.

After his murder, police knew then that they could be dealing with a hate crime or lover’s quarrel, the podcast says.

In January 2020, a forensic sketch was released by the Marquette Police Department, regarding a second person of interest in the case. Police think two people might have been involved, because of Girard’s build.

In Jan. 2020, police say this second person of interest is described as:

  • 5′ 8″ to 5′ 10″ tall
  • Slender build
  • Sandy lighter colored hair
  • Approximately 25 to 35 years old in 1988
  • Slumped posture when sitting
  • Cognitively impaired
  • Not social
  • Not well kept in appearance/dress

If there is anyone who still might have information about the Girard murder case, you can contact the Marquette Police Department at 906-228-0400.
