FLORENCE, Wis. (WLUC) - At Seven1Five Outpost, which is normally open during the summer season, co-owner Nicky Jones says business was impacted negatively by the pandemic last year. As of today, she expects that to change.

“We opened up {on Friday},” said Jones, “and we are definitely going to have to prepare for a busy season.”

On Saturday afternoon, the co-owner decided to begin the early summer with a bang, handing out free single scoops of ice cream.

“We’re doing free ice cream just to try to get people back in, to show that we’re back open and appreciation for supporting the locals,” she said. “We also want to share our new ice cream products.

About seven miles east, at the Wisconsin-Michigan border, is Bear’s Den, which sold $1.00 go-kart rides and free rounds of mini golf during its season opener. New owner Linda Carpenter anticipates a stronger summer than the previous.

“I think people are looking for something to do outside and looking for something to do {in general},” she stated. “We have precautions set in place where people don’t have to wait in line super close to each other. You can golf while you wait for the go-karts.”

Carpenter says it was a joy seeing customers enjoy the outdoors once again.

“It’s been amazing,” she said. “Every place, we’ll go out to dinner or go stop and get gas somewhere, and people find out that we bought the Bear’s Den. There has been nothing but positive responses, and everyone is super excited to get it open again.”

Both businesses hope to have a successful season and provide a way for people to come together. And the Bear’s Den’s message: start your engines because summer is just around the bend.
