MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - At Marquette Golf and Country Club, the Kentucky Derby festivities kicked off in a tribute to one of its beloved members who passed away two years ago.

Friends and family gathered in the club house Saturday for the Dan Kananen Memorial Kentucky Derby Party.

They celebrated in the Derby tradition with Mint Juleps, hot brown sandwiches, stylish hats too.

And most of all, they were celebrating a long-time member of the club.

Dan Kananen competed in their championship flight tournaments.

He passed away on March 2019.

“One of his favorite pastimes besides golf was to gamble. And so when they did his memorial party celebrating his life, they decided to do it on Kentucky Derby Day. And it is about remembering Dan -- and another excuse to have a party! So that’s what we’re doing,” said Clubhouse Manager Maggie Mahoney.

The energy came early Saturday afternoon as guests began filling the club house.

“All of his buddies are here. And when we did his memorial two years ago, you couldn’t even walk in the place! It was packed. I mean, he was just well-known and beloved by many. You know, just (carrying) on his tradition. And he loved a good party (laughing)! Not soon to be forgotten, our Dan,” said Mahoney.

The life celebration for Dan Kananen also featured Kentucky Derby trivia and best hat contests for men and women.
