HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - One Keweenaw Peninsula town is getting some recognition from a national real estate website.

Houghton has been ranked third in Realtor.com’s “Top 10 Affordable Small Towns Where You’d Actually Want to Live, 2021 Edition.” The list looked at cities with population’s under 50,000, “then factored in affordability metrics like median home list prices on realtor.com, year-over-year list price change, and ownership costs as a percentage of income.”

Danielle Hale, chief economist for realtor.com, said the list greatly favors the Midwest.

“The Midwest is well-represented thanks to its affordable home prices and abundance of small towns— and the few areas outside of the Midwest are both scenic and historic,” Hale said.

Houghton was the only Michigan town named to the list, taking third behind #1 New Ulm, Minnesota, and #2 Lexington, Nebraska. Other cities in the top 10 include Spencer, Iowa; Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Senaca Falls, New York.

Realtor.com says the median listing price for homes in Houghton is $149,500, which is almost $10,000 more than #1 New Ulm, Minn.
