Gwinn 2nd grader becomes member of Sun-Maid’s Board of Imagination
Gilbert Elementary student earns $5,000 for college plans, as well as Sun-Maid snacks for her family and school
GWINN, Mich. (WLUC) - Ruby Derwin and her family are cravin’ for some raisins.
Last week, it was announced she became one of five winners to be part of this year’s Sun-Maid Board of Imagination. The Gilbert Elementary 2nd grader says she feels awesome and is looking forward to hearing lots of congratulatory messages at school.
“It feels good to be the center of attention every once in a while, like now,” Ruby said.
It’s not just praise Ruby is receiving. She earned $5,000 for future college plans, as well as a couple of boxes full of Sun-Maid raisin products and Board of Imagination clothing. Her school is also receiving $5,000 and free Sun-Maid snacks for a whole year.
In addition, Ruby and an adult will travel to Fresno, California to tour the Sun-Maid plant when COVID-19 cases decline. Right now, her family has nothing but smiles.
“We are so incredibly proud,” said Ruby’s mother, Sarah Derwin. “She has always been a bright and imaginative kid, so it’s really cool that that’s being honored and recognized.”
Ruby’s first Sun-Maid board meeting is Wednesday, April 14th. She says she already has her next big idea.
“The biggest box of raisins, bigger than the one before,” she stated. “Probably like the size of my house.”
Ruby is already looking forward to meeting her fellow board members. For now, she has this message for other kids: “Try you’re best and use your imagination.”
