NMU’s Scheibal is GLIAC Soccer Player of the Week
First goal is a game winner
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Northern Michigan University Men’s Soccer player Niko Scheibal has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
The freshman, in a game where the teams battled 30mph winds coming out of the Northwest, collected his first goal in a Wildcat kit on Sunday. The cornerback from Minnetonka, Minn. scored his goal in the 54th minute over the then 3-0 Purdue Northwest team. Scheibal scored a header in the box after beating the GLIAC leading goalkeeper for the Pride, Raul Garrido. The ball came to him from his right from a crossing combination between Emanuele Ancione and Kaffie Kurz.
“In a match with limited chances and it all riding on the first goal, Niko delivered in a way he does consistently as a defender,” said head coach David Poggi. “With all he does, you can count on him to deliver. I feel confident every time he is in an opposing team’s box. He works hard in practice and it shows with how he is performing in big matches.”
This is the first GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week award in Scheibal’s career.
NMU returns to match action on Saturday at Upper Iowa. The game kicks off at 12 p.m.
