ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - Family and friends gathered in Ishpeming today to hold a ‘Justice for Lace’ rally on Tuesday.

The night of November 27, Lacie Borchert’s life was cut short. The 25-year-old’s body was found under ice in an Ishpeming lake just about 500 feet from where she lived.

Although an official cause of death has not yet been released, on Tuesday the Ishpeming Police Department ruled out any “Foul Play” in the investigation into Borchert’s death.

Borchert’s loved ones described her as a loving, happy mother of two.

“She used to leave little notes in the morning,” Borchert’s friend of six years, Maria Dahl said. “‘Good morning’. Just so uplifting and encouraging trying to make everyone’s day better.”

Dahl drove six hours Monday night to be in the UP to fight for justice of her dear friend.

“I am fighting for justice and I will not stop until justice is served,” she said. “Justice for Lacie!”

Borchert’s parents, Jeff and Lisa Kopsi, had custody of Borchert’s her oldest child since he was a baby. He is now 5 years old.

Before her death, the Kopsi’s said Borchert had been sober for some time and was heading on the right track.

“Lacie was doing good in her life,” Lisa Kopsi said. “She was finally stepping up and taking me back to court to take him back.”

Her parents said they have a hard time believing there was no foul play involved in their daughter’s death.

“In my opinion,” Jeff Kopsi said. “It’s impossible to either kill yourself or accidently drown in 18 inches of water in a 20 inch hole.”

They said they won’t stop until they get more answers.

“Lacie did not plan this,” Borchert’s mother said. “She did not want this and she would want justice and we’re doing exactly what Lacie would want us to do. To keep searching and keep finding the truth.”

Ishpeming Police Department will keep TV6 updated with the autopsy report when it is complete.
