MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - A group of women are picking up power tools to help students learning from home.

U.P. She Builders is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women by teaching them the basics of building.

This weekend, the group is taking their skills to Barrel + Beam to build desks for Marquette County students currently homeschooling. The desks will be given to students free of charge.

U.P. She Builders Executive Director Kate Havel says she was inspired to help others in her community after building a desk for her own daughter.

“I realized she needed her own space to focus and get her work done,” Havel said. “I built her a desk and if worked magically. So I know if it can work in my home, that there’s plenty of other families out there who are probably going through the same thing.”

Building will take place from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Friday, October 30, and from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 1.

U.P. She Builders is looking for volunteers to sign up to help, as well as students in need of desks. Anyone who would like to sponsor a student can make a donation online. More information is available on the event Facebook page.
