IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) -National Bat Week is an annual and international celebration to bring awareness to what bats do for nature.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan is home to nine different bat species. Bats consume many insects including mosquitoes, beetles, moths and flies.

The DNR wants to remind the public that you can support the state’s bats in many ways.

“Us folks in the bat conservation community spread the good word about bats. How beneficial bats are to our ecosystems, to our everyday life and celebrate how cool bat species are,” said John DePue, a wildlife biologist with the DNR.

He says many bat species are in decline, which is why we can help by maintaining habitats, and removing invasive species.
