NORWAY, Mich. (WLUC) -A classroom in Norway-Vulcan Area Schools got a $10,000 makeover.

In February, Meemic Auto Insurance presented twelve, $10,000 grants to teachers around the country. Three were presented in the state of Michigan and only one in the U.P.

Jacqueline Leiker, the school’s technology teacher, and the one who applied for the grant says Lakeshore Learning which is an educational product company, paired with Meemic to offer the makeover.

“It’s really amazing because furniture has evolved a lot and obviously schools generally don’t have a lot of money to invest in new furniture,” said Leiker.

Rory Cook, the regional manager for Lakeshore says that’s why the company offers grant money.

“Through different foundations we are able to come and set up classrooms,” Cook.

The new ’21st century' room includes bright colored bean bag chairs, pillows, and even a couch. It also has 2 different types of desks, one to sit and another to stand.

“Each kid learns a little bit different, so they have the opportunity to select their seat and how they approach the day,” said Cook.

Cook says Lakeshore works with teachers around the country to design classroom just like this.

“There’s a lot more collaborative, and group learning going on, so we try to push forward with that," he said.

Leiker says she can’t wait for her students to use the new set-up.

“When students feel comfortable and they are in a good environment, I think they learn better,” she added.

No matter when students return to the classroom for in-person learning, it will be a brand-new experience.
