UPDATE: As of Sunday night, it appears that the high pressure system that will move south of the Great Lakes on Monday will not change our wind directions as soon as previously expected. Therefore, lake effect snow will likely last much longer for the Keweenaw Peninsula all day Monday. Keweenaw and northern Houghton counties are under a Lake Effect Snow Warning. They may see an additional 6" to 10" on Monday, and likely even more in localized higher terrains, which will make for a difficult morning commute. I will be in Monday evening for Karl Bohnak with an updated forecast. Follow me on Facebook for other weather news.

Lake effect snow has already dropped several inches of snow in some spots as of Sunday morning, and it's not going anywhere for a while yet. Check out some of these snowfall reports prior to 9 a.m. Sunday: Calumet 2.4", Ontonagon: 3.8", Houghton and Mohawk: 5.5".

Lake Effect Snow Advisories are in effect for Keweenaw and northern Houghton counties that expire Monday evening and Ontonagon, Alger, Luce, and Chippewa counties that expire Monday morning.

As the snow continues under northwest winds for Sunday, Ontonagon County may see another 3" to 8", Houghton and Keweenaw counties can see another 3" to 6" or even more in higher terrains, and there may be 5" to 8" east of Munising. This is a classic northwest wind snow event, so Marquette and cities away from Lake Superior will be lucky to see a half of an inch on Sunday. Escanaba and Iron Mountain probably won't even see a flurry.

As high pressure moves to our south and winds shift out of the west for Monday, the lake effect snow bands will continue, but impact mainly just the Keweenaw Peninsula. There could be another 3" or more of accumulation on Monday, but it should slowly end in the evening as winds shift out of the southwest.

Here are some other forecast details: Sunday will have seasonable highs in the 10s to mid 20s, colder in the western half of the U.P. Skies will be a little clearer away from the lake, but still mostly cloudy. Lows will mainly be in the 10s, but single digits inland. Monday will be similar with temperatures, but with more sunshine away from Lake Superior.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be a little warmer. Tuesday should be pretty dry, but snow becomes more likely Tuesday night into Wednesday and for the next few days after that. Hopefully it will help our snowfall deficit. As of Sunday, the NWS is reporting they are 38.5" below average for snowfall in Negaunee Township.

That cold front has caused Marquette's temperature to drop about 20 degrees from noon Saturday to noon Sunday. It's also really done a number on the rest of the country. On Saturday, there were several high wind reports around Arkansas with several Tornado Warnings, but thankfully no reports of any tornadoes. Sunday still has many Flood Warnings as the front slowly moves east and continues to hammer the south with rain. Elsewhere, Phoenix, AZ has had two conescutive nights below freezing with more possible. They are currently under Freeze Warnings with southern California and Nevada. Check out the NWS National Watches and Warnings.
