MANISTIQUE TWP -- More land has been lost in one of a few brushfires Saturday.

A grassfire in Manistique Township quickly spread to a wooded area. A resident dumped some ashes from a wood boiler on his property on Shunk Road, causing the fire to spread according to authorities.

Crews brought the fire under control, but it still burned one and a half acres of land. The resident was cited for open burning and failure to take precautions to stop a fire from escaping in a forest area.

Residents are reminded that the fire danger remains high and that burning permits are not being issued at this time.
