UPPER PENINSULA -- As of Thursday morning, as much as 17" of snow has fallen in parts of Upper Michigan thanks to Wednesday's snowstorm. This set a new record at the National Weather Service for most snow seen on January 30. Cold air will rush into the Great Lakes region on north and northwest winds, creating lake effect snow from Thursday until Saturday morning.

Thursday and Thursday night, areas near Lake Superior will see additional snow; up to 10" are possible by Thursday evening in northeast U.P. areas. During this time, travel conditions will likely be at their worst with reduced visibility thanks to blowing, drifting, and falling snow. Brief whiteouts are possible and roads will be snow-covered and slippery.

Gradually, the winds will shift to the northwest on Thursday night and then to the west later on Friday. This, combined with dry high pressure building to our southwest, means that it should become less snowy for portions of northern Upper Michigan on Friday.

A cold snap makes its way into our late-week forecast also. Thursday's high temperatures will be around 10°. On Thursday night, temperatures should plummet below zero, with wind chills approaching the -20s thanks to the breezy conditions. The wind chill will remain below zero the entire day on Friday before getting to around -30° overnight. Dress very warmly if you plan to go out on Friday night!

Luckily, this cold snap won't last as long (or be as cold) as last week's. By the weekend, some locations in the Upper Peninsula will reach 20° again, which is normal for late January.
