MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP -- The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community has released a response to Governor Rick Snyder's letter opposing a tribal gas station in Marquette Township.

The plan was to use the tribe's Michigan sales tax exemption to sell gas at a cheaper rate on US-41 in Marquette Township. Governor Snyder's Office said the gas station would have presented unlawful competition to other tax-paying businesses.

On Friday the KBIC said the Governor's objection was "prompted by existing gas station owners and operators."

The KBIC said the Governor's claim that the gas would have been unlawful is baseless and that it would not have been a threat to other businesses. They added that the gas station project will continue to move forward.
