MARQUETTE -- A six million dollar road construction project on US-41 between Marquette and Harvey is almost complete.

Officials said that the project should be completed by next week, and it was originally scheduled to be done by October 25.

Since April, construction crews have worked on reconstructing the pavement and roadway, as well as repairing the bike path. Along with the repaving, the Michigan Department of Transportation says it also made the highway safer for the winter months.

"We eliminated the curb and gutter, which should eliminate some of the issues with snow drifting, and some other issues," said MDOT Manager Andy Sikkema. "So, overall, it should be a very safe roadway built to the current modern standards."

Crews are expected to paint the final pavement lines next week but will continue to add finishing touches until mid October.
