MARQUETTE -- After a month of warm and dry weather here in Upper Michigan, Mother Nature finally gave us a sudden shot of fall weather Monday.
While it made for a rough start to the workweek, storms like this are pretty typical during autumn.
"With wind gusts along the lakeshore gusting up to about 60 miles per hour, of course we're concerned about there being some minor limb damage, maybe tree limbs and maybe even a few trees perhaps coming down," said Matt Zika, of the National Weather Service.
Many people gathered at Lake Superior's shoreline to enjoy the spectacle Monday afternoon as 15 foot waves continued to build. Others weren't quite so ready for the sudden change.
"I really enjoyed the last month of warm weather and I think Mother Nature's going to really pay us back now," said Joey Pontbriand, of Marquette.
However, others can't wait for fall to go and winter to come.
"My favorite season is winter, and a storm like this just means winter's going to be right around the corner, so I'm really excited," commented Dan Skog of Marquette.
For those winter lovers, it'll be here soon enough.
"You know if this same storm that we have right now was three or four weeks later in the season, we'd be likely looking at shoveling and snowblowing snow and dealing with a pretty nasty winter-type storm," Zika added.
One bright spot in the dark weather day is that the rain should be enough to keep us away from a record dry September.
Tuesday AM Update: Monday's rainfall total at the NWS in Negaunee Township was a new daily record of 1.28". That means we've been saved from having a record dry September by upwards of 1/2" of rain.
