December 12, 2012: More Snow over the Weekend?

It appears that another system will bring snow to Upper Michigan this weekend.  Last weekend, low pressure moved in from the west.  This system laid down the heaviest snow to our southwest.  The Twin Cities into west-central Wisconsin got around a foot of snow, with nearly a foot-and-a-half west of the metro area (Image 1 above).  The storm lost steam as it headed east.  Over the U.P., a general 2 to 4 inches fell, with a few locations picking up a half-foot.

The new low is just settling into the southwestern U.S.  It appears as if this system will move out of Colorado and head northeastward.  Traditionally, these Colorado lows give us our heaviest snows.  However, this one should not be a back-breaker.  Saturday morning, the GFS model (which has been all over the place with this system) has the low over eastern Kansas (Image 2).  The upper-air flow should drive the low northeastward into the western Great Lakes (Image 3).  This model, as well as the other major numerical prediction models, takes it on a path just south of the U.P.  This would bring a light to moderate snowfall to the area, similar to last weekend.  Temperatures should be a bit warmer than last week, which would lead to a wetter, denser snowfall.  Right now, it appears that temperatures behind the system will remain near to a little above average.
