This is the next phase in the mitigation project to prepare the area for replacement with native soils and species

MARQUETTE -- The City of Marquette began removing the fill at the wetlands areas of the bogwalk at Presque Isle early Saturday.

This is the next phase in the mitigation project to prepare the area for replacement with native soils and species. The project does not bode well with bird watchers who say more than 200 species of birds migrate and breed on that land. They say removing the trees will destroy the birds' food source and shelter.

Two weeks ago, city officials met to address their concerns.
