Rabbit Island Artist in Residence Exhibition

Event Dates and Times

9/25/2017 - 11/12/2017
DeVos Art Museum, Marquette, MI
The Rabbit Island Residency, located on a remote island in Lake Superior, unofficially launched in 2010. For the last six years the museum has partnered with the Residency to present public programs and exhibitions featuring the artists in residence. The 2017 exhibition highlights the work of five artists who spent 2—4 weeks on the island between June and September 2016. This is the first year the artists have had nearly a full year to reflect and create work based on their experiences on the island. This year’s exhibition features visual artists Luce Choules (UK), Walter van Broekhuizen (NL) and the collaborative U.S.-based group of Jack Forinash, Kelly Gregory and Mary Rothlisberger. A full color, fully illustrated catalogue will be available, also featuring work by 2016 resident and writer, F. Daniel Rzicznek. The catalogue was designed by Edwin Robert Carter.

Holocaust Survivor Peter Stein speaks at Bay College

Event Dates and Times

10/3/2017 - Starts: 7:00 PM
Bay College Besse Theater, Escanaba Michigan
Bay College Campus Activities Board and the Bay College Diversity Committee are proud to host Holocaust Survivor Peter Stein. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia two years before the German Army occupied the country, Peter went to school where photos of Hitler and the Nazi flag appeared in every classroom. Peter’s father and eight members of his father’s family were arrested and eventually sent to Auschwitz where everyone except his father was murdered. Stein and his mother experienced food shortages, several allied air attacks, and general chaos.

Stein arrived in New York City when he was 12 years old, learned English, and became Americanized. He graduated from the City College of New York and then attained his Ph.D. in Sociology from Princeton University. Peter has taught at Rutgers University, CUNY, and Wm, Paterson University in New Jersey where he served as the Director of the Genocide and Holocaust Studies Center.

In this unforgettable lecture, Peter speaks about his family and their experiences during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. Introducing his family members and sharing their experiences as well as his own, Peter explores the larger historical context of WWII, antisemitism, and the Holocaust.

Peter Stein visits the Besse Theater on the Escanaba Campus of Bay College at 7pm EST on Tuesday, October 3rd. Tickets for the Besse Theater are just $1 for students, and $5 general admission. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Student Accounts Office in the Student Services Building, or online.
