U.P. baseball, softball players named all-state

The Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association has announced its all-state teams for this season. The Upper Peninsula has two players named, both in Division 4.

Rudyard catcher Tyler Wilson is a member of the first team, and Norway infielder John Grayvold, Jr. earns a spot on the D-4 second team. Wilson just graduated while Grayvold is going into his senior season.

The Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association has announced its all-state teams.

The Upper Peninsula has six first team and six honorable mention players. Delta County players dominate the first team.

Gladstone outfielder Katie Becker is on the Division 3 squad while Rapid River has four first teamers in Division 4.

Shortstop Ashleigh Montecello, second baseman Averi Kanyuh, first baseman Neena Brockway and pitcher Heather Sanderson join Rudyard's Mackenzie Gibson on the first team.  Gibson is a utility player.

Marquette third baseman Courtney LaFreniere is a Division 1 honorable mention.

The Divison 3 state runner-up Gladstone Braves have three honorable mentions:  first baseman Jammie Botruff, pitcher Christine Sharon and designated player Nicole Sharon.

Superior Central outfielder Molly Swajanen and Rudyard third baseman Cora Van Sloten also are honorable mentions.

Also in softball news, former Superior Central and Alpena Community College pitcher Brittany Maki has announced she'll continue her career at Olivet College next season.
