MARQUETTE -- For the 14th straight year, skiers took to the trails between Ishpeming and Marquette for the annual Marquette General Health System Noquemanon ski marathon.
Just under 1,400 participants took part in nine events throughout the day. It started at the Al Quaal recreation area in Ishpeming, and the first race of the day was the 50 kilometer classic style race which got underway at 9 a.m. eastern.
The athletes rode up and down hills all the way to the Superior Dome in Marquette for the finish.
Despite the lack of snowfall and warm temperatures during this mild winter, skiiers say organizers had the course ready to go by Saturday morning.
"It was really nice conditions; it's probably the best snow in the Midwest right now," said Mens 50K Classic winner, Santos Ocariz. "It was a really fun course, lots of winding, a lot of double pulling, it was a really good variety. It was really fun; the organizers did awesome setting it up. It's definitely an event I'll be back for."
Ocariz was the Mens Classic 50K marathon winner in 2:31:21. Former NMU All-American Martin Baanerud was fifth overall, less than two minutes behind Ocariz.
The Womens Classic 50K champ was Natalie Naryshkina from Verona, Wisconsin in 2:56:34. Another former NMU standout was second; Morgan Smith, skiing out of Utah, took the silver just four minutes behind the 50K classic champ.
