MENOMINEE (AP) -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is buying about 2,000 acres of Upper Peninsula land to create the Menominee River State Recreation Area. The DNR announced Tuesday it will buy the acreage in Menominee and Dickinson counties for $2.5 million from Wisconsin Electric Power Co.
The acreage includes two separate tracts and features whitewater rapids, waterfalls and scenic, rocky gorges. The tracts also contain areas popular with hunters, anglers and visitors interested in viewing wildlife such as eagles, osprey and waterfowl.
The DNR says the new area will be managed along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which has purchased adjacent land on Wisconsin's side of the Menominee River. Combined, the areas protect and make open to the public more than 5,000 acres.
